A New Age Look With Timeless Appeal
You've seen it so many times before - sleek lines, geometric shapes, gaze-grabbing colors and a celebration of symmetry. It has a retro feel but appears to be from a distant future at the same time. From old movie posters to new apartment buildings, it catches your attention whenever you come across an example. And one place you can find plenty of exquisite examples is right here on South Beach, including our Art Deco Hotel in Miami Beach.
Art Deco - also known as Deco - is a bold visual style that represented a radical break from the norm during the early part of the 20th century. Starkly set apart from the natural look of Art Nouveau, Art Deco was influenced by the increase in industrialization that took place between the world wars as well as pre-modern styling found in ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Italy. Rising to popularity in France during the 1920s, it served as an influence in the design of numerous items, including vehicles, jewelry and various home goods such as furniture, cookware and telephones.
The Look Goes Worldwide
In the 1930s the Art Deco movement caught on significantly in the United States, particularly in regards to architecture. Cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago and New York soon featured edifices such as the Chrysler Building that appeared almost alien in design. With South Beach undergoing rapid growth and development during the period, many builders within the community eagerly embraced the style. Soon the waterfront was filled with hotels and apartments sporting striking shapes and pastel hues.
Although the Art Deco craze slowed after World War II, a resurgence in the 1960s brought the look back into prominence. Today Art Deco continues to maintain a strong following wherever style and grace are appreciated - especially in the South Florida community that loved it right from the beginning. And at the Beacon Hotel, we're proud to have been a prime example of art deco hotels in Miami since 1937.
